Day 1 – Highlights

Time - Tuesday 19th 6:30 am (US time is Monday 3:30 pm)

  • At SFO, had to go through the security screen 3 times…. apparently the foil from the package of gum will sound the alarm =).
  • The 12 hour flight was not what I expected: seats were tiny…and I’m already small as it is. Jeff got the isle seat, me in the middle, and Julie (more about her later) at the window seat – although we were in the exit isle, so there was no window right next to her. Even though we had A LOT of leg room and near the bathroom, it was the most uncomfortable flight I’ve ever experienced. There was cold air coming from the emergency door (isn’t it suppose to be sealed?!?!?!?!?), the people in back of us kept moving our chairs everytime they went the to restroom (maybe 10 or so times). Our controllers for the light, onboard movie, call attendant button didn’t work. So we couldn’t watch the movies or read since the cabin was dark. Our backpacks got pushed way in the back in the overhead compartment so we couldn’t even access our backpacks to get our laptop. I tried to sleep the whole time (except for meals) but I wasn’t successful. Jeff on the other hand was able to maximize his sleep on the plane… haha.
  • We got to meet Julie, our next seat neighbor and found out that she was also from the bay area. She’s going to Singapore, Vietnam, and Thailand for a whole month before going back to school at UCLA. Found out that the church she was went to… I forgot the name – I know it starts with Korean, but the rest I don’t remember… was a church CBCSJ had worked with before (A praise night and we also went to Tsunami with them one time). IT is definitely a small world when it comes to Christ’s family. Oh yeah, Julie, if I don’t hear back from you then I guess you got caught with your gigantic pack of gum in Singapore =).
  • Arriving at Manila around 3:45am was nice since we didn’t have to deal with the crowd. It was very humid too; as if I walked into the bathroom after someone had just taken a hot shower.
  • Waiting for connecting flight to Davao was long. We waited about 6 hours before we got to board… There was suppose to be internet there…. but we couldn’t connect so we disappointed and bored since we live off the internet =).
  • Arriving at Davao we waited for our luggages to pop out onto the carousel. It wasn’t until practically all the baggages had been unloaded before we found out our luggage was else where since it was an international flight. We met up with Ben, CheChe, Michael, Daniel, and another lady from Mupt and had lunch at the place where Che and Ben got married (I need to find out the name of that restaurant). The food was great too… and no I didn’t try Balute yet.
  • At OMF House, Jeff and I got debriefed about where we were staying and some logistical stuff about the place. We were given the rest of the day to rest and review our orientation package for tomorrow (which is today). Michael and Daniel had other plans so they weren’t at the house for dinner, but Ben and Che took us out to dinner at a nearby mall where security guards are like leaves on a tree. We got there via motorcylces – Jeff on Ben’s and I on Che’s. Below is a video of Jeff and Ben =).
